Matt is also the Vice President – Public & Government Affairs for Houston based Kirby Corporation, the nation’s largest operator of tank barges and a leader in the distribution and service of industrial machinery for the marine, energy, trucking, nuclear and power generation industries, among others. He has a background in maritime law and is active in maritime industry and community affairs.
Matt is a 1982 graduate of Texas A&M University and a 1985 graduate of the University of Houston Law Center. Upon completion of law school, he began representing vessel owners and their underwriters in a variety of areas. He also served as general counsel for a Texas based tank barge operator. In 2004, Matt joined Kirby as its Director – Government Affairs. Today, he oversees the company’s public and government affairs issues and its engagement with numerous associations and coalitions of which Kirby is a part.
In addition to serving as an officer or director of maritime industry groups including the American Waterway Operators, Waterways Council, Inc., American Maritime Partnership and several local and regional organizations, Matt is a former chairman of the Galveston Bay Foundation, a former District Chairman in the Boy Scouts, and is Board Chairman and an actively deploying member of TEXSAR, Inc., a team that provides search and rescue and related services upon the request of state and local officials across Texas. Matt retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Commander, after 21 years of service as an intelligence officer.
In his free time, Matt enjoys hunting, fishing, and relaxing on Galveston Bay and in South Texas.
